It’s estimated that in the U.S. alone there are over 20 million postage stamp collectors. But, stamp collecting is one of the most popular hobbies in the entire world. Stamps are great collectibles for anyone, you don’t need a lot of space to store them and it’s one collection that you can take with you where ever you go!

The first stamp collectors were actually children, at the time, adults considered it a childish hobby. During the 1920′s publicity began to circulate about the value of some stamps and it spurred a huge increase in the amount of stamp collectors. And, today there are literally thousands of stamp shows around the world!

Unless you’re a serious collector that’s grabbing up rare stamps, one of the best things about stamps is that many are very cheap and often free! It’s the perfect beginner hobby especially for children, large collections can be accumulated quickly just from letters you receive in the mail.

There’s no other type of collection that is so affordable that you can literally add to your inventory with pocket change! And, many times magazines and newspapers have ads offering entire envelopes of stamps from around the world for just a few dollars.

While some collectors stick to one type of stamp, many find it hard to resist the many beautiful stamps available and have a mixed collection. It’s a great way to learn the history and culture of a country.  But, it’s like having your own mini art museum right in your hands!

The very first stamp ever issued came out in 1840 in Britain. It depicted the young Queen Victoria and even used these stamps have went for as much as $150. A 1918 air mail stamp that sold for 24 cents, now goes for as much as $200,000 because the image is inverted. Even the ones with the correct right side up image sell for around $100.

Probably the most expensive postage stamp ever purchased was a 1855 Swedish banco. It was a yellow stamp that was actually meant to be green in color and because of the misprint it sold for $1.35 billion dollars in 1990! Proof positive that stamp collecting isn’t just a childish hobby for children!
